What are they all about?

I once attended a course titled Arts & Empowerment. I loved the name as that is exactly what it did for me. It empowered me to use the skills that I had built up over years of teaching in the area of disability and allowed me to transfer my skills to an infinite amount of groups and work with them in a multi-sensory dimension. When I speak of multi-sensory, I mean working in the areas of art, movement, music, language, noise, smells and taste and touch.

I look at the group that want to work with me; I often meet with them first, and see what their needs or objectives are. Are they looking to improve communication skills? Are they seeking to encourage better turn taking skills with children? Are they hoping that the group may gain a little confidence to speak as individuals by learning to speak within a group? I design the workshop with this prior knowledge and check back to see if the activities are suitable and that the materials are appropriate for the clients involved. This is often an important factor when you are working with groups who may have some special needs or requirements.

The workshops are all interactive and where possible if there are staff present with clients, I get them to take part also. This can alleviate the 'them & us' scenario. The workshops are of varying lengths, depending on what the aims and objectives of the group are. They can be as short as half an hour, or as long as a daylong seminar. They can be tailor made to sit into a larger frame-work or work as a standalone educational tool.

Though art has a known and well documented therapeutic effect, these workshops are carefully designed in a non therapeutic way. All activities are positively executed and where emotional issues arise people will be directed to an appropriate professional in all cases. The well being of the individual is paramount at all times. This is guaranteed and discussed prior to all workshops.
